The harmful effects of mercury exposure have been well documented (both as a vapor and in landfill), the human health risks as well as environmental damage should be taken very seriously. The danger arises if the mercury is released into the environment, either by the light bulb being smashed or put in a landfill. By simply collecting and recycling fluorescent lights properly, we can prevent mercury from being released into the environment.
The most effective way for us to keep mercury out of landfill and out of our environment is to recycle with a safe, responsible recycler that the business community can rely on. By Recycling, we are doing the right thing for our generation and for future generations.
The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) regulates the disposal of waste mercury. It is illegal to discard fluorescent light tubes/lamps in the trash or dumpster. Violations can result in large fines and criminal prosecution.
Fluorescent tubes and bulbs may be managed as universal wastes under Title 22, Chapter 23 of the California Code of Regulations.
- A business must ensure bulbs, tubes, or lights are destined for a recycling facility.
- A business may not allow the accumulation of used or spent lights beyond one year.
- A business must be given an invoice, bill of lading or certificate to show proper disposal and transport which is kept on record for three years.
